ARTS 321
Painting II
Credit hours (3)
Prerequisites: ARTS 221
Intermediate level problems within the painting medium emphasize technical and theoretical understanding of color and composition. Individual expression as applied to contemporary approaches in painting will be highlighted.
2. Detailed Description of Course
This course combines concepts, methods and theories from ARTS 221 that will expand students’ perceptual awareness. An ongoing concern with painting materials, techniques and application is explored. Students are encouraged to develop their own representational and/or abstract painting direction through projects that may include still life, landscape, and the figure. A significant feature of this class is the opportunity for individual student advisement. Slide presentations and critiques are regularly scheduled.
3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Students will be familiar with safety regulations concerning different painting materials and painting supports. They will explore and utilize different materials as a painting support and painting ground. They will generate paintings employing both traditional mark-making and non-traditional mark-making techniques.
Students will produce paintings that incorporate intellectual, symbolic and subjective content that utilize the interrelationship of formal unity. Advanced color relationships and compositional strategies that promote aesthetic coherence must be demonstrated.
Students will demonstrate historical and contemporary styles relevant to their painting projects. They will demonstrate confidence at a more advanced level than ARTS 221 through practice and critique of their own work, as well as the works of other students in the class. They will acquire comprehension of the decision-making process by studying the works of professional artists in their field and through exhibits, stills, videos, and by entering juried exhibitions.
