Starroot (aka Ruth Neumann) was born in Germany and immigrated to the US in 1986. A longtime resident of Floyd County, she has become known as one of the region’s leading self-taught “Visionary” or “Outsider” artists. Her paintings are now in the permanent collections of Baltimore’s American Visionary Art Museum and elsewhere, including Radford University. Steeped in Native American spiritual traditions, she creates boldly colorful and exuberant acrylic paintings abounding with visual references to ancient Maya and contemporary Wixárika imagery—along with a plethora of counter-culture celebrations of nature, the cosmos, music, synesthesia, and extra-terrestrial encounters.

This exhibition celebrates Radford University’s Kolla-Landwehr Foundation Collection of art by master yarn painters of Northwest Mexico’s Indigenous Wixárika community. Their cultural heritage is deeply rooted in pre-Columbian religious traditions, including extensive pilgrimages to sacred sites associated with their Ancestor Deities and complex rituals involving natural psychotropics, especially peyote. Their master artists use a colorful and unique ”yarn painting” technique to depict origin myths focusing on maintaining harmony with nature as a means of spiritual growth, community welfare, and successful harvests. Radford University’s Wixárika collection is the largest and best documented public collection of such works outside Mexico.

Honored with three Grammy Awards and five IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year awards, Carter has shared his remarkable talent with artists ranging from Ricky Skaggs and Vince Gill to Steve Earle and Dierks Bentley.
