Athletic Training

The Master of Science in Athletic Training Program develops students’ expertise in sports medicine and athletic healthcare. The program offers clinical experiences in settings such as high schools, colleges, industrial, esports, and performing arts that will help prepare you for board certification as an athletic trainer.

Careers and Internships

Our M.S.A.T. degree is structured so students can take the certification to become a nationally certified athletic trainer. Athletic trainers are employed in:

  • High schools, colleges, professional sports
  • Physician offices, hospitals, health and recreation clubs
  • Performance arts, Cirque du Soleil, and ballet theaters
  • ESPN Wide World of Sports and Disney Theme Parks
  • Industrial settings including Volvo, BMW, and Amazon
  • Military, NASA,
  • Fire and Police Agencies, including the FBI

Opportunities for Athletic Training students at Radford

  • Purposeful campus activities further prepare students for future work as an AT. These include Mental Health First Aid through New River Community Services
  • Interprofessional Education Nutritional Counseling activities with Nutrition and Dietetics students in our Health and Human Performance department
  • Interprofessional Education Counseling activities with M.S. Counseling and Human Development students in our College of Education and Human Development

Admission Requirements

Admission to athletic training programs across the nation is competitive. Your application to Radford University's M.S.A.T. program may be more likely be successful if you have:

  • All applicants should apply through the ATCAS Application System.
  • Strong reasoning and writing skills
  • Work or volunteer experiences with diverse populations of physically active population including scholastic athletes, club sports, youth sports and work with older athletes
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75, preferred GPA 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in all undergraduate and/or graduate coursework
  • A demonstrated record of successful professional and interpersonal skills, as demonstrated through references and exhibited during an on-site or Zoom interview
  • One cohort is admitted to each campus location for the Radford MSAT program each year, with a summer entry date. All applications are submitted to the Office of Graduate Affairs and are screened for accuracy and completeness before being forwarded to the Athletic Training Program Admissions Committee for a comprehensive review.

    • Human Anatomy & Physiology I and II (8 Credits Minimum)
