Radford celebrates third annual Community Fest – with double the impact

Radford University and the City of Radford partnered for the third consecutive year to host the Radford Community Fest, a street festival that serves as both a goodbye to summer and a big welcome for the fall semester as students return to campus. 

In three years, Radford Community Fest has brought folks from all over the region to Main Street for fun and festivities – but this year saw nearly double the participation. Not only did more people enjoy getting together over food, brew and music; vendors also saw more visitors at their booths.  

"I’ve called the New River Valley home my entire life,” said Jamie Walker, founder of JSouthernCrochet. “Being able to participate in events like Radford Community Fest as a local small business owner means a lot to me. This event isn’t just about selling what we make; it’s about meeting our neighbors, making connections and continuing to invest in the community we’re fortunate to call home."  

In addition to being a community celebration, Community Fest is also a welcome-home party for students at Radford University.  

Lee August, a graphic design junior from Roanoke, Virginia, says part of the draw of Radford is the surrounding community – and this event reinforces that concept.  

“One of the things I treasure most about being at Radford is how easy it is to feel connected to the surrounding community. Community Fest gives students a reason to step outside of their normal routines and see more of the people, organizations and places that make Radford and the New River Valley feel like home.”  

As Main Street was taken over by food trucks, local vendors, street performers and live musicians, students and community members came together to become reacquainted.  

“What makes Radford University special is the relationship we have with the community that surrounds us,” President Bret Danilowicz said as he took to the stage to kick -off the festival. “Our students don't simply go to school in Radford. They live here. Over the next several years, this community will become an important part of their Radford experience.” 

Radford Community Fest is just that – a chance for the community to come together, celebrate together and share with one another. Whether that is through sharing handmade crafts, good food or partnership, the people of Radford and the surrounding New River Valley heard the call.  

“We try to stay hyper-local,” said Tricia Smith, interim vice president of Student Affairs and Radford Community Fest leader and organizer. “We prioritize Radford and NRV vendors, businesses, artisans, community agencies, faith groups and causes to emphasize the impact that we have on one another in this area.”
