Focus and Philosophy: Music, to me, serves as a powerful tool for fostering connections, narrating stories, and delving into profound concepts. In my teaching, I actively encourage students to cultivate critical thinking, embrace creativity, and recognize music as both an artistic expression and a valuable life skill.
Background: My diverse background encompasses research, composition, military music, and music education. I’ve authored a textbook on film music, composed works that have been performed nationally and internationally, and held the positions of pianist and music director in the active-duty U.S. Air Force and Army National Guard.
Teaching: At Radford, I teach music composition, where students not only enhance their musical expression and literacy but also critically analyze the art of human expression through music. My classes strike a balance between academic rigor and creativity, equipping students for both professional musical careers and personal growth as musicians.
Research/Scholarship/Creative Work: My research focuses on original music composition and critical analysis of film music, but I’ve also published on military music history. I’ve presented at conferences, published, and composed music for various ensembles, including chamber groups, audiobooks, and PBS productions. These projects have enabled me to bridge the gap between scholarship and creativity, which I aim to share with my students to inspire them to become the next generation of music creators and scholars.
